Woman charged in truck theft case
A 33-year-old woman is facing a second-degree felony charge after allegedly stealing a truck and later telling police she intended to return it.
According to a magistrate’s complaint filed in superior court, Lynmae Mary Megofna admitted to taking the truck without permission in October while it was parked for repairs at a friend’s home.
The vehicle’s owner reported the theft on Oct. 20. Days later, officers spotted the truck on the roadway and pursued it after it accelerated and ran traffic signals. The driver told police Megofna had rented the truck to him and that he was supposed to return it later that day.
Police were unable to locate Megofna at the time, but she was arrested tuesday during a traffic stop when she was found as a passenger in another vehicle.
When questioned, Megofna told officers she planned to return the truck but claimed the man who was caught driving it had taken it from her. She admitted she did not report that because she knew she was not allowed to take the truck in the first place.
She was released on a $2,000 personal recognizance bond.
