Controversial Malesso land bill withdrawn

Senator Shawn Gumataotao has withdrawn Bill 182, which proposed allowing a 242-acre property in Malesso’ to be used as a military and law enforcement training site.
The move comes after the Guam National Guard formally requested the bill be pulled. Newly-confirmed adjutant general Karin Watson said the proposal does not align with the Guard’s current priorities.
The land would have been transferred from the Chamorro Land Trust. Since its introduction last year, the bill faced opposition from Malesso’ leaders and residents, including Senator Chris Barnett and Malesso’ Mayor Franklin Champaco, who said the property would be better suited for affordable housing.
Gumataotao informed Speaker Frank Blas, Jr. and the oversight committee of the withdrawal, saying he supports the Guard’s request and values community input.
