Master navigators bring ancient science to STEM classrooms

A powerful blend of culture, science, and collaboration is setting sail in Guam’s classrooms. Career Tech High Academy Charter School is launching a new year-long learning series called “Learn With A Master Navigator,” bringing traditional Pacific wayfinding directly to students at Science is Fun and Awesome Learning Academy Charter School.
On Friday, master navigator Antonio Piailug and navigator Jerry Joseph will lead the first in a series of navigator-led learning experiences—sharing indigenous knowledge rooted in astronomy, ocean science, meteorology, and observation.
Career Tech principal Wil Castro says this is what true charter collaboration looks like—opening doors, sharing resources, and making rare cultural knowledge accessible to more students across the island.
The program is part of Career Tech’s Maritime Academy, which blends traditional seafaring with modern maritime science and professional credentialing, including a US Coast Guard-approved merchant mariner pathway launched last year.
Leaders at SIFA say the experience reinforces that traditional navigation is STEM in its purest form—proving indigenous knowledge systems are not only relevant, but essential to modern education.
Career Tech says the series is designed to engage schools and the broader community—ensuring this living knowledge continues to guide future generations across Guam.
