Guam welcomed 10 new babies born during Typhoon Sinlaku. KUAM News sat down with parents Ana and Brian Quinata, their son Legend, and 3-day-old daughter Legacy Sky, to talk about their amazing birth experience.

As Mother Nature showed her strength earlier this week, more than a handful of expectant mothers also showed theirs — with a total of 10 women giving birth at the Guam Memorial Hospital during the storm’s period. Ana is one of them.

On Wednesday morning, as Sinlaku’s hazardous conditions continued to linger, she and her husband Brian, welcoming Legacy Sky into the world. “When I got on the bed, I was already 6 centimeters dilated, and then when they checked me again, I was another 7, so it was just a rush from the labor and delivery room to the actual delivery room," Ana recalled.

And amidst a quick labor and delivery process and all the chaos happening around them, they say their little girl was the calm in the storm. Her mom described the experience as, “It was like a breath of fresh air.”

And after the tough part was over, anxiety finally setting in — the couple hoping to bring their new born home to a comfortable and safe environment, as Sinlaku caused widespread water and power outages throughout the island, and destruction to many residents' homes.

But upon arrival back home, relief washing over them. Brian said, “We got home, went straight in, turned on the light, and we were like, yes! Babe, we got power! We went and grabbed the kids. We also opened the door, and it wasn’t flooded. We were lucky, very lucky.”

Now, with their utilities on, and the storm’s passage, the Quinatas are settling in, ready to enjoy every moment of family time. And while the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child, it’s clear they have a strong one behind them.

The two, both employed at Arashi in Dededo, feeling the love from their team. “They’re very supportive," Brian gratefully shared. "They offered a helping hand, with water, ice, and somewhere to charge; they’re really helpful. It really means a lot during a time like this, it means a lot.”

In the meantime, they share this message of support to all the families who also welcomed their bundles of joy recently: “I would say first of all, congratulations to everyone," said Ana. “Hoping for support for everyone else that doesn’t have their utilities.” And Brian added, “We’re the few lucky ones that have our power, and that’s all we could ask for.”

And as for Arashi’s viral social media post announcing their baby’s name is Sinlaku, the couple says it was all for fun.

(Although they added it's a strong contender for her nickname.)
