"The Losers" is a well-edited action flick that doesn't try to take itself too seriously. Fortunately for director Sylvain White, this recipe brings out the best in the film and "The Losers" is a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend 99 minutes of your life.
"The Losers" follows the story of an elite team of mercenaries: Captain Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), communications officer Jensen (Chris Evans), the sniper Cougar, vehicle expert Pooch (Columbus Short), and weapons officer Roque (Idris Elba). On a routine mission in Bolivia, the team is betrayed by the CIA and left for dead. After months of living under the radar, the team is found by Aisha (Zoe Saldana), a beautiful Bolivian who is after the same man who set up the Losers. Together, this ragtag bunch of soldiers attempts to take down the nefarious villain Max (Jason Patric).
If the script looks pretty short and simple that is because it is. "The Losers" runs just a little over 90 minutes, but is packed with action. The dialogue in the film is pretty funny as well. The biggest attribute of the film is the cast. Every role was casted well and Jason Patric and Chris Evans steal the show. In all honesty, the movie would be nowhere near as enjoyable had these two actors been replaced.
Additionally, the editing is top notch. A film that is 90 minutes long would seem rather short but "The Losers" follows a comfortable pace and the editing makes somewhat mediocre action appear to be very exciting and hype-generating. The film has a comic-book feel to it and it is very appealing.
But "The Losers" isn't perfect. The film suffers from really corny dialogue at parts and of course all the events in the movie are simply unbelievable. But "The Losers" is an action flick that knows this. As a result, it doesn't try to prove any immortal questions or bring about some world issue to the forefront of society - it just tries to be fun and enjoyable. In that regards, "The Losers" clearly succeeds.
