Public Health confirms first pertussis case of 2026

The Department of Public Health and Social Services has confirmed Guam’s first case of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, for 2026.
The case was laboratory-confirmed on January 8, and Public Health officials say an epidemiological investigation and contact tracing are now underway to determine the source of exposure.
Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can cause severe coughing fits lasting weeks and can be especially dangerous for infants, leading to complications such as pneumonia, seizures, and breathing difficulties. Some infants may not cough at all, but instead experience life-threatening pauses in breathing.
DPHSS is urging residents to make sure they are up to date on their DTAP and TDAP vaccinations. Vaccines are available for eligible children at the Northern and Southern region community health centers. Anyone experiencing flu- or pertussis-like symptoms is encouraged to contact their primary care provider.
