Prutehi Guahan is encouraging residents across Guam and the Marianas to take part in its second community comment workshop focused on deep sea mining in the region.

The free virtual workshop, scheduled for Tuesday, January 6 at noon, will be held in partnership with EarthJustice and will expand on discussions from the first session. Topics include claims about the financial benefits of deep sea mining, a review of international law, and insights from EarthJustice’s formal comments submitted on Guam’s behalf. A recap will also be provided for those who were unable to attend the first workshop.

The session will be led by attorneys from EarthJustice’s mid-Pacific, tribal partnerships, and international programs. Organizers say the workshop is designed to help community members participate in the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s request for information on potential mineral leasing offshore the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Public comments to BOEM are now due by January 12, 2026. Space for the workshop is limited, and registration details are available online through Prutehi Guahan.
