A decaying shear line and nearby surface trough brought record-setting rainfall to Guam on December 22, with 2.17 inches measured — breaking a long-standing daily record set in 1947.

Showers and thunderstorms linger near and west of the Marianas, but conditions are expected to steadily improve as these systems weaken and shift away.

Across Guam and the CNMI, showers will continue to taper, with only patchy rain expected through Wednesday morning. Drier weather and lighter winds are forecast for Christmas Day. Mariners should remain cautious this afternoon as heavier showers and isolated thunderstorms move into western coastal waters.

Seas and surf remain elevated, with combined seas around 8 to 10 feet and surf up to 11 feet along north-facing reefs, producing strong rip currents along north and east shores. Conditions are expected to ease later this week before seas build again over the weekend as another system passes north of the region.
