Dededo crash suspect charged with two counts of vehicular homicide
The man accused of killing a woman and her infant in a high-speed Dededo crash has been formally charged — with prosecutors alleging excessive speed and failure to yield led to their deaths.
23-year-old John Mariano Moses who was arrested in connection with a deadly Dededo crash that killed a woman and her 1-year-old daughter was charged in the Superior Court of Guam with two counts of vehicular homicide as second-degree felonies and one count of vehicular negligence with injuries as a third-degree felony.
The charges stem from a two-car collision that happened around 6:20 Sunday morning at the intersection of Route 1 and South Chalan Henry Kaiser. Prosecutors say Charity Mina Berry, 30, and her 1-year-old daughter, Minareen Immy, were passengers in a red Nissan Sentra that was making a lawful turn toward the westbound lanes of Route 1.
According to court documents, as the Nissan moved through the intersection, it was struck by a white Honda traveling eastbound. Investigators allege Moses was the driver of the Honda.
After the collision, Moses allegedly fled the scene on foot. Berry, her daughter, and the driver of the Nissan were transported to Guam Regional Medical City, where Berry and her daughter were pronounced dead. The driver remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Guam Police.
Moses later turned himself in to authorities. In charging documents, prosecutors note Moses claimed his speedometer was operating normally prior to the crash. However, investigators reported the speedometer was locked at 60 miles per hour, well above the posted 35-mile-per-hour speed limit.
The complaint alleges Moses failed to control his speed, failed to yield, and failed to apply his brakes in time — actions prosecutors say directly led to the injuries and deaths in the crash.
According to the Office of the Attorney General, Moses faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted on all charges. He is currently confined at the Department of Corrections and is scheduled to appear via Zoom in Superior Court Tuesday afternoon for his first appearance hearing, where a judge will decide whether he remains detained or is released pending trial.
