When it comes to influenza, the island is now emerging from the worst of this season, according to the Department of Public Health and Social Services’ Weekly Influenza Epidemiology Report released Wednesday.

Recent data showing just 19 cases reported in the week ending December 6—a notable drop, especially as the mainland US enters its influenza season.

The report shows Guam saw a sharp increase starting in October, with 107 cases by the week ending October 18, 230 cases by October 25, and 381 cases by November 1.

The island’s peak of 431 cases marked the highest weekly count in more than 30 years.

The report also highlights a significant shift in subtype during October and November, with Influenza A/H3 now the dominant strain detected on island during the time the report was released.

Age trends show most reported cases were among those aged 5–19 and 20–54.
