GPD officer placed on house arrest
A Guam Police Department officer charged in a fatal hit-and-run will now remain under house arrest as he awaits trial. Police Officer Derrick Atan, who faces vehicular homicide charges in the death of John Haas, was released from the Department of Corrections after posting $20,000 cash bail following five days in jail.
During a superior court hearing Wednesday, Magistrate Judge Sean Brown set strict pretrial conditions, including house arrest, after hearing emotional statements from the victim’s family. John Haas’ father urged the court to impose stronger restrictions, telling the judge the family has been devastated by what he called irresponsible negligence.
Prosecutors requested limits on driving and alcohol use, citing allegations Atan had been drinking and driving when the fatal hit-and-run occurred early November 30.
The judge ultimately ordered Atan to remain on house arrest, barred from driving or consuming alcohol, and required to check in with a probation officer three times a week. He is also prohibited from contacting witnesses or the victim’s family.
GPD Chief Stephen Ignacio says Atan remains on paid administrative leave as the case moves forward.
