The Department of Public Health and Social Services has confirmed two new cases of pertussis — bringing Guam’s total to seven so far this year. Public Health says one of the latest cases was directly linked to a previously confirmed infection.

Pertussis, or whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can cause severe coughing spells lasting weeks, often followed by the signature high-pitched “whoop.” Symptoms can also include vomiting and extreme exhaustion.

DPHSS warns that infants are at the highest risk, with complications ranging from pneumonia and dehydration to seizures, brain damage, or life-threatening pauses in breathing. Officials are urging the community to stay up to date on vaccinations, noting that pertussis is preventable.
