Senior centers face funding uncertainty; MCOG Awaits Confirmation from DPHSS

Guam’s senior citizens centers are facing possible closure this week due to funding shortfalls. According to Mayors Council of Guam executive director Joy Jean Arceo through a release, funding for the island’s 12 senior centers will only last through Friday, November 15, unless additional funds are confirmed by the Department of Public Health and Social Services.
Arceo says she has met with mayors and recreation staff to explain the situation, noting that inalåhan’s center will remain open since it’s sponsored directly by DPHSS. She added that discussions with DPHSS officials and Jon Calvo are ongoing — and that he’s assured her the funds needed to continue operations should be confirmed by Wednesday, preventing any interruption in services.
If the funding transfer isn’t completed by week’s end, hundreds of manåmko’ who rely on these centers for socialization and recreation may find their doors temporarily closed.
The Mayors Council expects a final update by Friday.
