The village of Yona is growing a little greener this month. In celebration of Arbor Month, the Guam Department of Agriculture’s Forestry and Soil Resources Division teamed-up with the Yona Mayor’s Office and the Southern Guam Soil and Water Conservation District for a community tree planting event.

Volunteers planted 28 trees around the village's senior citizen center and baseball field — including native species like åhgao, langiti, and ifit, along with fruit trees such as calamansi and tamarind.  The goal is to create healthier green spaces and promote sustainability across the island.

The Yona planting is part of a series of events for Arbor and Fire Prevention Month.  That included a fire and tree safety presentation for Head Start students on Friday and a Citizen Forester Mapping Day held Saturday.

As this year’s Arbor Month wraps up, the community is reminded of the importance of this year's theme: “Green Spaces, Shared Places — Enhancing Our Forest Together.”
