We continue our Think Pink series with a closer look at the numbers — and the reality — behind breast cancer on Guam. According to the Guam Cancer Registry, breast cancer is on of the top five cancers on Guam and is the second leading cancer death amongst women on island. It’s a statistic that underscores why awareness and early detection are more than just messages — they’re lifesaving measures.

Guam Cancer Registry's Maria Manuel said, "During 2018 to 2021, a total of 265 invasive breast cancer cases were reported. on average of 66 women are diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and 22 women are diagnosed with insight on Guam. an average of 7 women die each year from breast cancer."

She adds that 35 percent of breast cancer cases are diagnosed in women younger that 55 years old. She added, "Breast cancer incidents and mortality rates are highest among Chamorro women. in stages 1 or 2. In Guam 62.5 percent of these cancers are diagnosed at early stages and stage 2 or localized. we must continue to advocate - the earlier the cancer is found the earlier detention screenings and beating cancer."

"We are seeing but steady increase of breast cancer but the good news is it is being checked earlier. The World Health Organization's Breast Cancer Initiative is to have over 60% of invasive cancers diagnosed at stage 1 or 2."
