Guam’s leaders are joining the Federated States of Micronesia in mourning the passing of the honorable Joseph J. Urusemal, former president of the FSM. President Urusemal passed away on September 16 in Palau at the age of 73.

Urusemal, a native of Woleai in Yap, dedicated his life to public service, education, and nation-building. He served as the sixth president of the FSM from 2003 to 2007, remembered as a statesman of integrity, humility, and quiet strength who always put his people first.

Speaker Frank Blas, Jr. called his passing a profound loss not only for Yap and the FSM, but for all of Micronesia, noting the historical and familial ties that bind Guam with the FSM community.

On behalf of the 38th Guam Legislature, Speaker Blas extended heartfelt condolences to Urusemal’s family, the people of Yap, and the entire FSM, saying his legacy of unity, education, and service will continue to inspire future leaders across the Pacific.
