The Guam Police Department is investigating a deadly crash that claimed the life of a pedestrian late Friday night.

Around 11:19 p.m. on Sept. 5, a male pedestrian was struck while crossing Route 10 in Mangilao, near the Best Wash & Dry Laundromat.

He was not in a crosswalk. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, marking Guam's 16th traffic fatality this year.

The driver fled but was later located in Yona. The vehicle was seized, and the operator was interviewed and released pending further investigation.

Mangilao Mayor Allan Ungacta has long called for improvements to the poorly lit area.

“There has been an ongoing project that is slated throughout this year and next with resurfacing and repaving of Route 10 north and southbound lanes...and I reminded them about a traffic light in front of the Pay-Less area,” said Ungacta.

Ungacta also extended his prayers to the victim’s family and issued a reminder to drivers.

“As a reminder in that area, again slow down and watch your speed in that general area. And be reminded, we are back in school and there is Father Duenas along that stretch and have access to that area,” added Ungacta.

GPD is asking for the public’s help in identifying the victim—who had no identification on him.

Anyone with information is urged to call GPD Dispatch or submit an anonymous tip to Guam Crimestoppers.
