Visitations are suspended for the day at the Guam Memorial Hospital following power fluctuations that prompted “fire activation protocols" on Tuesday afternoon.

GMHA said a component in the electrical room on the third floor Medical-Surgical (MedSurg) area began sparking and emitting smoke. They add the issue was immediately contained using a fire extinguisher and no further hazards were reported.

Separately, an air handling unit in a different wing burned out due to the unstable power supply. As a precautionary measure, patients in the area were temporarily relocated after issues were identified.

The Guam Fire Department responded to assess the electrical fire and to monitor air quality, as part of the fire activation protocols, the release added. They remained on site until no significant concerns or other hazards were identified.

During the incident, the hospital operated on generator power to maintain critical hospital functions. As of 3:00 pm, the facility safely transitioned back to island power. The Guam Power Authority was also on site to assess the main power lines.

GMH’s systems, phone lines, and network are up and running after being down for about an hour, officials estimated. Outpatient clinics have resumed service for the day, but visitation remains temporarily suspended until future notice for safety of patients, families and staff.

“GMHA is grateful to our staff, the GFD, and GPA for their swift action and support,” said Acting PIO Melissa Quinata-Ronquillo. “Our focus remains on patient safety and continuity of care as we continue to monitor the situation.”

Further updates will be provided as needed.
