Meth trafficking conspiracy busted

A half-pound of meth, a Facebook mistake, and a family-led drug ring unraveled. Eric Shaun Cruz pleaded guilty in federal court last Thursday to conspiracy charges tied to a 2023 plot that shipped methamphetamine from Florida to Guam. Prosecutors say Cruz sent the drugs to his brothers, Jeremy and the late Jonovan Cruz, after coordinating the operation through Facebook Messenger.
But the plan fell apart when Jonovan accidentally posted a screenshot of the tracking number on his public Facebook page. A tipster shared the post with federal agents, leading to a search warrant and the discovery of 228 grams of meth in the parcel.
Eric Cruz also admitted to conspiring to launder $44,000 in drug money, with funds wired from Guam to him in Florida and a co-conspirator in California. He now faces life in prison for the drug charge and up to 20 years for money laundering.
Sentencing is set for October 2.
Meanwhile, Jeremy Cruz awaits trial, and Jose Salazar has already pleaded guilty. Jonovan Cruz’s case was dismissed after he died in DOC custody earlier this year.
