Governor Lou Leon Guerrero has responded after chief medical examiner Dr. Kenny Su sounded the alarm about limited resources plaguing the office. As reported, the newly-appointed CME raised concerns about the more than 40-year-old facility, unreliable morgue refrigerators and severe short staffing.

The governor says the CME’s Office is under the purview of the Office of the Attorney General and any facility upgrades falls in the AG's court. She added, "So I have not heard from the CME, personally. I don’t know if he brought this up to the attention of the Office of the Attorney General. I will certainly follow it up."

In his interview with KUAM News, Dr. Su expressed support for the proposed medical campus in Mangilao, though discussions with the governor have yet to take place. The Magahaga says she's not opposed to having a new cme office as part of the new hospital, saying, "Well, the CME, they use our morgues and all that, so certainly there’s no reason why we can’t have a space for them.

"I will follow it up with him and see where he’s at in that situation. Because I don’t know where else to have him placed and I don’t know what needs to be upgraded. I know the hospital has a contract with them. I know because they are under the Office of the Guam Attorney General, that’s where the responsibility lies."

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner plays a vital role in providing answers to families and the justice system, what Dr. Su calls "the last human rights of decedents" - the deceased.
