The Archdiocese of Agana announced that Archbishop Emeritus Michael Byrnes passed peacefully this morning in Detroit, surrounded by close friends and caregivers.

Archbishop Byrnes served the Archdiocese of Agaña with unwavering faith, courage, and compassion during some of the most challenging chapters in the history of the Catholic Church in Guam. Appointed by Pope Francis in 2016, he left his home in Detroit to shepherd our people with humility and strength. He led us through the storm of the clergy abuse crisis, the hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the painful but necessary process of healing and renewal.

Despite his own health challenges—including a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease—Archbishop Byrnes remained a devoted servant of God and a faithful leader until his resignation in 2023.

He will be remembered not only for his strength and leadership but for the love he showed our community, and the sacrifices he made for our spiritual well-being. His legacy will forever hold a cherished place in the heart of the Church and the people of Guam.

Please keep Archbishop Byrnes in your prayers, and join in remembering his life and service with love and gratitude. Details regarding the Requiem Mass and other liturgical commemorations will be announced soon by the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission.
