GEB to discuss superintendent's employment in executive session

Scheduled to take place this evening — the Guam Education Board reconvening in executive session, continuing discussions from last week’s meeting. GEB chair Angel Sablan telling KUAM the board will meet with the Office of the Attorney General and Guam Department of Education superintendent Dr. Kenneth Swanson to “discuss the process that has already started.”
Although Sablan couldn’t provide details—citing personnel matters—he says Swanson will have the opportunity to hear from and speak to the board, pertaining to how to proceed with his employment. Sablan also responded to recent comments from committee oversight chair on education, Senator Vince Borja, regarding his call for action and unity.
“Everybody from the board members, superintendent, the deputies, everyone down to every school–it does take cooperation, collaboration, and togetherness, because as long as somebody in that chain is not going to be working with our purposes and our mission, then there’s always going to be a ding somewhere," he shared. "So, we’re going to try to see what we can do to ensure a smooth opening for the 2026 school year, and that’s my goal. Like I said, I agree with Chairman Borja that we do need to put either our differences aside, stop pointing fingers and blaming each other, and just move forward.”
Meanwhile, Sablan says they are appealing the US Department of Education’s denial of GDOE’s request regarding American Rescue Plan funds—this time using the correct verbiage and justification the agency is looking for. The deadline to resubmit is June 7.
