More than a year after agreeing to plead guilty, Craig Christian Nauta is set to be sentenced in federal court.

Nauta, who admitted to being a felon in possession of a firearm, is scheduled to appear before Chief Judge Frances Tydingco-Gatewood at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 26.

The charges stem from a traffic stop in Sinajana on Nov. 8, 2023, where Nauta was found sitting in a vehicle with defective lights.

During a police search, officers discovered drug paraphernalia, claimed by the driver, as well as a loaded .22 caliber revolver near Nauta’s seat. He reportedly asked officers to “give him a break.”

Court documents reveal that Nauta has multiple prior felony convictions, including burglary and assault on a police officer. He was also on parole at the time of the stop.

Under his plea agreement, signed this past April, Nauta faces up to 15 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.

However, the government has agreed to recommend a lighter sentence, asking the judge to consider the lower end of any sentencing range.

Ultimately, the decision rests with Judge Tydingco-Gatewood, who is not bound by the recommendations.
