Port sues Guam shipyard for typhoon barge damage

The Port Authority of Guam is suing Guam Shipyard and two of its crane barges, YD 120 and YD 223, for $55 million, claiming the vessels were improperly moored ahead of Typhoon Mawar.
When the storm hit on May 24, 2023, the barges broke free, slamming into the Golf Pier, ripping out 15 steel-encased concrete piles, and severely damaging the seaplane ramp.
The Port said both barges are now inoperable and need extensive repairs or replacement.
In its lawsuit, the Port alleges Guam Shipyard failed its legal duty under maritime law to secure the barges properly. It’s asking for damages from the shipyard and both vessels, plus court costs.
This comes on the heels of another legal win for the Port.
Back in March, a federal judge ruled the shipyard had no right to stay on Port property after its lease ended, rejecting claims it had overpaid rent.
