Man who stole mail from Tamuning Post Office takes plea deal

A man accused of breaking into the Tamuning Post Office and stealing mail is now facing up to 10 years in federal prison.
Matthew John Briola Sablan has agreed to plead guilty to one count of burglary and one count of mail theft, each carrying a maximum penalty of five years behind bars and a $250,000 fine.
According to Court Documents, Sablan was caught on surveillance video on March 4, 2025, wearing a hoodie and pink shorts, using a pry bar to get into the locked sorting room. He made three separate trips, each time leaving with a tub full of mail and packages.
He was arrested, then released with strict orders to stay away from post offices.
But just weeks later, on April 1, someone tried to break into the same sorting room. This time, the door held up, thanks to added metal reinforcements.
Investigators suspected Sablan again and he eventually admitted to both crimes.
As part of a plea deal, five other charges were dropped.
Sablan is set to be sentenced on Sept. 4.
