President Trump has paused tariffs on Canada and Mexico for one month.

This after leaders from both countries agreed to ramp up security at their borders which, at least for now, averts tariffs.

In a post on social media, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada will be spending $1.3 billion on a plan to reinforce its border with new helicopters, technology and personnel, and other measures to stop the flow of fentanyl.

Canada had announced its border and immigration investment at the end of last year.

Soon after, Trump also posted on social media emphasizing that tariffs will be “paused for a 30 day period to see whether or not a final economic deal with Canada can be structured.”

The announcements come after Trump signed an executive order Saturday to place a 25% tariff on nearly all goods coming into the U.S. from Canada and Mexico.

Trudeau had announced over the weekend that Canada would respond to Trump's tariffs by issuing its own 25% tariff on more than a billion dollars worth of U.S. goods.
