Recognized for his leadership in advancing appellate judicial education, Chief Justice Robert J. Torres has been selected to chair the Appellate Judges Education Institute Annual Summit next year.

The AJEI Summit, organized by the National Judicial College, is the premier forum for appellate judicial education in the United States.

The event gathers appellate judges, attorneys, and legal scholars for a four-day program focused on appellate courts and practice, featuring top practitioners, law professors, and experienced judges.

Several Justices of the United States Supreme Court, leading practitioners from private and government practice, outstanding law professors, and experienced appellate judges and court attorneys have presented at the AJEI Summit, including recently, Associate Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch; UC Berkley School of Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky; U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar, and former U.S. Acting Solicitor General Neil Katyal.

“This is a valuable opportunity for Guam to contribute to important discussions on the future of appellate courts,” said Torres. “The summit allows us to engage with national leaders in the judiciary and bring back insights that can enhance our own practices and strengthen public trust in our courts.

At this year’s summit in Boston, Massachusetts, held in November, Torres moderated a plenary session titled “The Ethical Tightrope: Navigating Media Influence and Judicial Integrity.”

The session explored how courts can address the challenges of constant media scrutiny, combat misinformation, and communicate effectively with the public while maintaining transparency and impartiality.

“Courts must adapt to the modern media landscape, communicate transparently, and address misinformation to reinforce trust in the judicial process,” added Torres. “I am grateful to our distinguished panelists for guiding these vital discussions on securing public confidence in the judiciary.”
