Breaking Wave Theatre Company presents “We Will Not Go Silent”

The Breaking Wave Theatre Company is making a return to the stage with “We Will Not Go Silent,” a performance exploring the climate crisis through Guåhan’s story, bringing to light the root of climate change in subject matters such as colonization, militarization, and capitalism.
The performance is set for Nov. 22 to Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. in the Agana Shopping Center Expo Hall.
Tickets available for sale are $15 for General Admission and $10 for Students and seniors. All payments are cash only.
Created by Breaking Wave Theatre Company, this multidisciplinary work combines theatre, puppetry, music, poetry, and movement to explore a people’s enduring struggle for survival and resilience amid the climate crisis.
In this collaborative performance, the ensemble brings to life the experiences of Guåhan’s Indigenous Chamoru people and those who call the island home.
Through their voices, We Will Not Go Silent reveals the ongoing environmental and cultural harm from external forces, while also offering a call to action, a reminder that we can draw strength from ancestral knowledge and Indigenous practices to protect and heal our land.
“I have come to discover that silence is an action that is imposed on us and it has falsely tried to claim itself as a pillar of our culture,” said Joyce Torres, Lead Director and Ensemble Writer & Actor for We Will Not Go Silent.
“But the act of speaking - out loud, to each other, to our sainas, to our ancestors - has always been a sacred act. One that encourages healing, teaching, and building community,” Torres added.
We Will Not Go Silent is a current work-in-progress that will continue to grow even after the November performances. Audience members are encouraged to leave feedback through surveys conducted after the show.
“As a devised piece, We Will Not Go Silent, is a living document crafted by nine artists,” added Torres. “It will continue to grow and evolve. With audience feedback, we hope that it continues to build in ways that reflect our community and uplifts all of our perspectives.”
“The show is so specific to the islanders' experience,” said Shannon Dean San Nicolas, Music Composer and Ensemble Writer & Actor. “And not only do we face harsh truths but it’s done in a way that could have you crying, laughing, and smiling.”
