Guam Police officers aren't just getting a new look - their safety has reached new heights with the introduction of advanced body armor.
Stephen Ignacio, chief of police for GPD, told KUAM News, “The Crye precision JPC 2.0–jumpable plate carrier.”
That’s the technical term for GPD’s new body armor, a lightweight and durable vest system. “A significant step forward in equipping our officers with the most effective and reliable protective gear," he continued.
The new vests, with a total price tag of $1,280 per piece, will replace older and heavier one-size-fits-all models. The chief commented, “These older vests were often over-sized and cumbersome.”
The lightweight design, weighing just under 9 pounds, will be issued on each officer’s size, increasing access to their firearms and more mobility.
“Once the new vests are fully issued, we will implement clear guidelines on wearing them, ensuring our officers are much safer than they are today," Ignacio said.
Of the 400 vests ordered and funded by American Rescue Plan monies, 112 have arrived. Each vest has an average life-span of 7-8 years.
