The Guam State Historic Preservation Office held a solemn reinterment ceremony at Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz over the weekend.

During the ritual, the skeletal remains of ancient CHamorus were reburied wrapped in muslin cloth and placed in a woven basket.

Camp Blaz Spokesperson Maj. Diann Rosenfeld said it was during the Construction of the Skaggs Urban Training Complex that archeologists discovered five sites each with at least one burial dating to the Latte period.

She added all CHamoru burials at Mokfok were preserved in place, and construction projects were redesigned to avoid burial sites.

At the site of the reinterment ceremony, archeologists discovered 14 unique grave pits, which include at least one infant and multiple children, adolescents, and adults.
