Will today's rain, rain go away? Or is this gloomy weather set to come again another day?

From cloudy skies to sudden downpours in the next, weather experts are breaking down if the patterns we’re seeing are out of the ordinary for the island’s fanuchånan or rainy season.

Brandon Aydlett is the Science and Operations Officer at the National Weather Service in Tiyan.

“This time of the year, as we’re heading into September, we anticipate increasing shower events–so, we’re gonna see those longer wet periods of rainfall. However, occasionally, the more concerning thing is seeing larger tropical disturbances that may develop within Micronesia near the Marianas–some of which develop into stronger wind systems, maybe even tropical depressions or tropical storms,” said Aydlett.

So, is the end in sight for how much longer we will be under our umbrellas? Or is a foul-weather friend expected to show up at our doorstep soon?

“We’re still 5-6 plus days out–but we’re looking a potential disturbance to form near Chuuk or Pohnpei state–and that may even lift toward the Marianas or continue westward, but at this early phase; there’s still nothing out there,” added Aydlett.

And while Aydlett and his team keep a close eye on any changes, he urges the community to always stay informed and prepared.

“For anybody listening, always have a plan–what is your tropical storm or typhoon preparedness plan? The Office of Civil Defense over here in Guam has a great list of resources for how to prepare for typhoons–what kind of items you would need to have at home to prepare. Also, where do you get your information, latest forecasts, and advice? Where do you get the latest forecast? And I would say right here, at NWS,” he said.

Meantime, a wet pattern is forecasted in the next two weeks–which Aydlett added is typical for this month. He adds the fall months are expected to see 60-70 inches of rain on average, while disturbances tend to bring localized heavier showers.
