Deep into a secluded road behind the Dededo Sports Complex, there’s a new illegal dumpsite that’s causing concern for the Guam Fire Department.

Littered with cars, buses, and loads of trash, this calls for accountability on those responsible.

GFD Spokesperson Fire Lt. Nick Garrido said it’s a familiar stretch of road. It’s a hotspot for grass fires and people burning abandoned cars.

“It is the pipeline road that also leads to the St. Paul Christian Academy. That area– we have responded to multiple times throughout the last several years,” said Garrido.

But he said the trash is new, adding, “This also has been addressed to the Guam EPA as well as the Dededo Mayor's Office.

Illegal dump sites like this are a safety hazard. Garbage is flammable and every time these junk buses, cars and tires burn, the toxic fumes released isn’t something residents want around their kids.

Just nearby is another hotspot for families with the soccer field and walking park just minutes away.

“The kids walking around and the parks that are around there. When we go out there and we suppress the vehicles– we extinguish them– the issues that we’re faced with is now we have rusted metals and metals that could be a hazard to those walking or any type of incident like that,” said Garrido.

Dededo Mayor Melissa Savares said the trash is on CHamoru Land Trust property and it’s their responsibility to clean up.

It's now the third illegal dumpsite on CLTC property that KUAM has tracked this year alone. From hundreds of feet of junk cars lining the roadside in a Yigo neighborhood to another hotspot for firefighters on Swamp Road in Dededo.

KUAM reached out to the CLTC for comment.

Meantime, the Guam Environmental Protection Agency said 71 litter citations were issued this fiscal year with a big increase from last fiscal year’s 37 citations.

The citations were for illegally burning, littering, dumping and storing trash and abandoning junk cars.
