CNMI leaders, Tinian residents, and military officials gathered on Tinian recently to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Saipan and Tinian.
Local leadership was joined by Rear Admiral Brent DeVore and Rear Admiral Gregory Huffman while reflecting on what they describe as 80 years of peace in the Pacific. A ceremony was held at the American Cemetery in the Military Leased Area at the North Field on Tinian.
In his remarks, Lt. Gov. David Apatang said, “War will continue on this earth and we should pray that another one in the Marianas will never happen…a war today between the most powerful nations might mean the end of human civilization.”
Officials also honored the lives lost during the battle.
