About 100 spots have been designated for people to set up along the parade route on Liberation Day. it's expected to be quite the celebration as we again did not have a parade last year due to Typhoon Mawar. KUAM spoke with applicants, as dozens lined-up overnight to secure their spots.
The lines snaked along the sidewalk at Paseo on Friday morning. Many spent the night just to be among the first to get a prime spot along the Liberation Day parade route. Asked what she's most excited for for the 80th Liberation, Rosa Palomo said, "Our children are coming home! she added that they took advantage of the discounted airfare from United, saying, "That helped. Thank you very much for that deal."
It's an exciting time for many looking forward to the floats and the performers ready to dazzle all along Marine Corps Drive this July 21. Parks & Rec deputy director Warren Pelletier shared with KUAM News, "The director and my goal was to get as many as we can for this 80th Liberation for the families so they can participate, as well."
Pelletier showed the process for those lined up for permits, as VIPs and survivors will be in front of the grandstand in Hagatna. This year, about 100 spots have been marked for paradegoers.
"They are going to go like wildfire," he said. "We anticipate every year it happens the public that weren't able to get slots will get upset, but Guam is a loving culture. With all the different village fiestas, you are pretty much invited. Everybody is chelu, prima, pari. If they see you they are going to invite you in."
It's a time for all on Guam to come together and honor the greatest generation. The parade begins on July 21 at 8am, with fireworks will going off at 7:21pm.
