The CNMI Republican Party president and former CNMI Lt. Gov. Diego Benavente asked, “How many more hotels have to close in the CNMI? How many more individuals will lose their jobs? And how many more public services and programs will have to be reduced before our elected leaders realize that something has to be done today, immediately.”

The party released a statement over the weekend and said it supports key initiatives to revitalize tourism and economic growth. It comes as Hyatt Regency Saipan officially closed its doors on Sunday after four decades.

The party said it endorses the Commonwealth Ports Authority's application to the Department of Transportation for an exemption from Part 213 Order 2023-8-10 and the implementation of the CNMI EVS-TAP program.

“This program would allow pre-screened travelers from China to visit the CNMI without a visa under certain conditions, further facilitating the return of Chinese tourists,” the CNMI GOP said in its press release.

The party plans to release its complete platform soon, outlining its strategy for economic growth ahead of the November election.
