My name is Angela Santos, and I will earn the privilege of serving as the people’s senator in the 38th Legislature.
I am the daughter (youngest of 9) of Amanda LG and Angel Cruz Santos II. Always leading by example, my eldest sibling, the late Senator Angel Santos, inspired and forged in me the communal values that encompass our culture.
I put those values to work when I served as community liaison for Senator Clynt Ridgell (Jan. 2019 - Dec. 2021). In that role I conducted research for what is now the Cannabis Industry Act of 2019. With Senator Ridgell as Chair of the Committee on Agriculture, I was his representative for all work relating to the Department of Agriculture. I also worked on issues surrounding the Okkodu Power Plant, gathering community input and doing outreach to share information to the people.
Later, I served as a member of the CHamoru Land Trust Commission (Dec. 2020 - May 2022), where I fought to return land to the people, and even conducted several meetings as the acting chair of the Commission.
Guam is our only home. We are her people and proud protectors.
My time in government taught me that being a protector and effective public servant requires staying rooted in the community. It involves not just knowing, but feeling the everyday hardships people face.
And those who know me best will testify - I’ve always been of, for, and about our people. I speak our native tongue, always support my family, friends, and even strangers in need, and I share my love everywhere I go. Forever and always I breathe life into our culture of community.
I am an experienced servant ready to lead. And my message to our people is that, now more than ever, we must weave the roots in our community.
We the people are struggling everyday just to survive. Many of us are being priced out of living in our only homeland because our rent and utility bills are too damn high. Communities are unsafe because cycles of crime, violence, and drug abuse are spiraling in the wrong direction. Our health care is unattainable or inadequate or both. Our schools are under threat of closing. Our waters are poisoned, and lands stolen from our people still have yet to be returned.
If the government is going to help our people rise above these struggles and injustices, then elected leaders cannot descend down from the political elites. They must be lifted up from the grassroots of the community. Only then can we cast away the corruption of politics, and as your Senator I will stay rooted in putting the prosperity of our people first.
I will restore, protect and sustain the wealth of our land and culture. I will combat crime and drug abuse by building healing pathways to restorative and compassionate justice, and I will fight to keep our people rooted on Guåhan, so that we may prosper here together for generations to come.
