Amid federal and local officials raising the alarm on PFAs, is bottled water safe from these forever chemicals?  In an effort to ensure bottled water is contamination-free, Senator Sabina Perez introduced Bill 269, which seeks to standardize labeling and testing of bottled water.

Physician Dr. William Weare testifying in support of the measure, saying, "I think this bill is essential so the people of Guam know what is safe to drink and what isn’t."

"GWA has continued to put out statements that their water is safe to drink all the time, knowing it contains significant levels of carcinogens. This is unacceptable."

But the Guam Environmental Protection Agency asked  to reconsider the bill altogether as it would be a costly and confusing mandate. EPA spokesperson Nic Rupley said, "Generally speaking, bottled water is a sealed commodity that is regulated by the food and drug administration. It is also the agency’s understanding that Public Health may possess the local oversight and compliance and enforcement capabilities."

Senator Joanne Brown suggesting to hold another public hearing with Public Health at the table.
