The Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler weather radar will remain offline for an additional four to six weeks until key components arrive, are installed, and tested.

The radar is operated by NOAA’s National Weather Service Guam and maintained by the U.S. Air Force with support from NWS’ Radar Operations Center.

The WSR-88D underwent significant upgrades during the 2023 Service Life Extension Program, wherein the weather radar remains in optimal working order.

New components are needed for the automatic power transfer switch which safely transfers the radar from commercial power to generator backup while also protecting the system from the frequent power surges.

Until these parts are installed, the radar will sit in standby mode to prevent possible damage and allow the radar to be brought online should any significant weather threats emerge.
