Federal environmental officials raising the alarm on PFAS found in drinking water across the nation.

A U.S. Geological Survey last year finding nearly half of the tap water in the U.S. contains PFAS.

PFAS is known as “forever chemicals” for their persistence as they can take thousands of years to break down in the environment.

Now the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced this week it’s issuing the first ever national regulation limiting the amount of PFAS in drinking water.

EPA says while there are no safe levels of PFAS, public water utilities now have to test for six different types of PFAS chemicals to reduce exposure.

And as Guam waterwells faces its own PFAS contamination, Senator Dwayne San Nicolas is calling for testing on water imported to the island.

He says recent discussions with Public Health have revealed the status and safety of imported water is currently unclear and not systematically tested.

Meanwhile, the USEPA is making $1 billion of federal grant monies available to states and territories to help water utilities come into compliance with the new water standards.
