GCC hosting Young Authors Showcase this weekend

The power and value of words will be on display this weekend at the Guam Community College for a Young Authors Showcase. GCC Education Department's Dr. Debbie Ellen said participants will be, "Talking about the value of our island and the resources and our people of our island. And it also gives them students an opportunity to write about something that they're more familiar with so creating books and writing their own stories it's very empowering."
The creative minds are being mentored by Literacy Navigators, who share the passion for bringing ideas to life and impacting people. One such mentor, Gabriella Leon Guerrero, told KUAM News, "Growing up, I also wanted to be a writer. I think when you have freedom to really put whatever you think down on a page and for other people to read it and see it and say, 'Hey, that's pretty good!' even if you're just a child.
"But that's kind of what this program was doing - to really help kids. For them to see their works out there."
The exhibit is an effective demonstration of contemporary storytelling, combining classic ideas with modern imagery to drive their concepts home. They're expressions of original thought, of unique perspectives of the world.
The Young Authors Showcase is being from 9-1 this Saturday at GCC's Mangilao campus in the auditorium.
