Embers from a nearby barbecue could be the culprit of a large wildfire on Cocos Island today.

Authorities are still investigating the cause. A video circulated today of the large smoke billowing in the air.

Multiple calls came into 911 around 10:30 this morning.

Units from the Guam Fire Department and Department of Agriculture responded by boat to the island just off Malesso.

It took about three hours before the fire was contained.

Officials confirmed the flames burned through two hectares of the northern end of the island, the private side.

Again the cause is under investigation but, authorities said individuals on the island admitted that they were starting a barbecue but the wind carried their embers into the brush and they did not realize how quickly the fire would develop.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported and no known loss of wildlife, at this time.

This is the second wildfire to spark on Cocos Island in less than 30 days.

A reminder to the community that a red flag warning remains in place until Wednesday night.
