In line with the Korean Consulate's promise of making the island safe to the family of a South Korean tourist who was shot and killed in Tumon in early January.

Control concepts, handcuffing, counter striking, restraint systems, weapons, and equipment training were just some of things a group of Visitor Security Officers (VSO) and Department of Military Affairs Security officers learned during a week long defense tactics training.

G4S/VSO Operations Director Paul Suba said, “We need to pull our resources together and the people that are doing the job at the forefront need this training and with this training, you are More equipped.”

It was after the Tumon incident that Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB President and CEO Carl Gutierrez called for a task force meeting composed of representatives from Public Safety agencies in hopes of achieving goals of crime prevention and safety of island residents and tourists.

On Friday, a ceremony was held to acknowledge completion of training by instructor and Park Police Superintendent, Joey Terlaje.

“This is the initiative of Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and former Governor Carl Gutierrez. Gutierrez had created a task force a couple of weeks ago and he's identified a lot of initiatives and security measures…We all have the same goal, same common goal, and that is the safety and security of our people, not just in Tumon, but also the whole island,” said Terlaje.

He added, “What did they expect from me? They wanted to learn new skills, profiling, knowledge and safety. So I just want to ask the class- did I meet your expectations? Yes. 100 percent.”

To close out the ceremony, the officers provided a glimpse of what they learned from handcuffing and baton skills. Officers were then exposed to pepper spray so that they understand what the person feels and how they may react.

Training will continue to be offered for all VSOs.

Parks and Recreation Director Angel Sablan expressed, “We just want the community to know that there are more of them than of us but we are going to be out there watching and making sure our community is safe...one way or another, we keep them safe.”
