As Guamanians, we often say 'adios', but never truly 'goodbye'. And Coach Jacob Dowdell, who embraced the Hafa Adai Spirit 18 years ago when he first arrived on island, embodies that sentiment.

"In May of last year, I suffered a stroke," recalled Dowdell. "I had a another stroke in September and again in October. But then epilepsy crept into the picture.  It's a new fight for me right now, so I'm I'm a proud epilepsy warrior."

He's not only accepted his medical condition – he's embraced the challenge, seeing it as as opportunity to continue to help others. Rather than say "Why me?", he says "Why not?"

He explained, "I'm going to help the epilepsy foundation, because we're going to sell the official Jacob Dowdell Collection Love Always Wins t-shirts!"

And true to his character, immediately after the news of his life-changing event, he welcomed his new community.

"It's a good opportunity for me to keep fighting, to make a difference in the lives of people," he said.

The difficulties epilepsy brings everyday have altered his movement and speech, but Dowdell says it's sharpened his mind and made his heart even stronger. And this is what's keeping him going on his new journey, and he hopes you'll join him.

What gets him through each day is his beloved island culture, his faith, and his competitive spirit. "We're going to win - we're going to beat epilepsy. I know that," he said.

And as his adopted family, we're right here to help. We've got your back, coach. And we'll see you soon.
