Astumbo Elementary School passed its sanitary inspection by the Department of Public Health and Social Services with 38 demerits, resulting in a "C" grade, just a few points shy of failing.
Among some of the big-ticket six demerit citations included indoor air temperature of occupied rooms and relative humidity not met in some areas, unclean ventilation system filters in disrepair in certain rooms, and some restrooms not meeting requirements.
All three citations have to be corrected by date of Jan. 26.
Dr. Kenneth Swanson, Guam Department of Education Superintendent, thanked the school community for its efforts.
He issued the following statement in part, "The school has shown a
remarkable dedication to providing quality education and nurturing positive relationships among students, staff, and parents."
Regarding her school making the grade, Josephine E. Parel-Fontbuena, Principal of Astumbo Elementary School, said, "We passed the Public Health Inspection thanks to the efforts and cooperation of many people. I want to thank the staff, faculty, students, parents & families, Astumbo ES PTO, GDOE facilities and maintenance personnel -John Palomo, Sean Aguon and his team, Nik Cruz - CIP, Christopher Anderson, and our community partners who supported us in getting ready for the inspection. This accomplishment shows everyone's hard work."
