After a six-day manhunt, the Tumon shooting suspect's apprehension Tuesday night brings a sense of relief to the victim’s family and the local Korean community.

Korean Consulate Head In Kook Kim sat down with KUAM expressing his thanks. “I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the police and the Guam community for the quick arrest for the wanted suspect. It is really awaited news. Many Korean people are relieved to hear that news,” Kim said.

The elderly couple was visiting from South Korea last week to celebrate the husband’s retirement. An armed robbery along Gun Beach in Tumon turned the vacation deadly.

Kim told us the wife is now back home along with the cremated remains of her husband. She's now planning funeral services.

Kim said, “Actually they left for my home country early in the morning yesterday…Before they left for Korea, I spent much time with the [bereaved] family and comforted them.”

He said before the grieving family left, the wife expressed her gratitude to the Guam community. Kim shared, “The last word she spoke was, “I will not forget the grace extended to her.”

But he said it’s a tragic shooting that should never be forgotten.

Kim said, “Actually I’m afraid that this tragic death of a Korean tourist will be forgotten as time passes by. I love the wise saying spoken by George Santayana, 'Those who don’t remember the past are doomed to repeat it.’”

He promised the Korean consulate will be working together with the Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB), Guam police and local government to ensure the island is safe. Kim added, “I want this tragic death to serve as a valuable milestone to uplift safety on this beautiful island.”

Kim leaves us with this message for Korean visitors, ensuring their efforts are underway to make public safety a priority with a priceless lesson learned.

Kim shared one more statement in Korean. It was translated to say,

“On Jan. 4, a tragic event occurred in Guam in which one Korean tourist was shot dead by a robber. This situation has caused Guam and the Korean community to have a very difficult time. I hope this sad incident will not be forgotten and the Korean Consulate will actively cooperate with the Guam Government and local community to help Korean tourists be more safe and comfortable,” Kim said.

An added push in hopes for a safer and more comfortable Guam.
