As the manhunt continues for the suspects, our team coverage takes us closer to the victim and his family now mourning.

Local Korean community member Ina Lee has been living on Guam for the past 41 years and she's faced her share of tragedies.

Over two decades ago, she lost her brother to the Korean Air Flight 801 crash at Nimitz Hill that killed 229 lives. Still, she was shocked and saddened to hear about the armed robbery that took the life of a fellow South Korean national in Tumon on Thursday.

“It was a very heartbreaking moment. I can't show it in my heart or my feelings but I feel for them, that it shouldn’t have happened but it happened,” Lee expressed.

And the fear lingering that the innocent victim could have been any one of her family or friends.

Lee said, “Lots of texts have come in and phone calls from my friends from Korea. Because I live here for 41 years, I have a lot of friends that visit Guam. They feel that Guam is such a safe place to come and visit. But this suddenly happened and it really affects them.”

Still, she’s reassuring them that Guam is safe. Lee and others in the Korean community are keeping the victim’s family in their prayers.

“Our church members, we are praying for the victim’s family. We cannot go to them, but we pray for them. Our Korean community is really worried about what we can do to help. The Korean Consul General is doing the best they can. The Korean government too is doing what they can to handle the funeral services and stuff that they need to do. And of course the [local] government is doing what they can to help the next tourists be safe in Guam,” Lee said.

Lee also shared that the victim’s family arrived on Guam recently. They are working with the Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) and the Korean Consulate to sort out bringing the body back home. In the meantime, a memorial was set up at the crime scene.

A bundle of flowers and the victim’s favorite foods laid out in memory on the way to Gun Beach.

It's also a reminder to passerbys of the tragic and sudden loss of life.

The Korean Consulate Head of Mission In Kook Kim in a Joint Press Conference Friday expressed his condolences, “On behalf of the Korean Consulate and the Korean community, I'd like to express my deepest condolences to the victim’s family.”

His commitment is to ensure Guam is a safe destination. He added, “As you are aware, last year we are in daunting challenges posed by Typhoon Mawar. I'm sure that we can equally overcome this unbearable challenge we are facing now.”

Lee sends a similar message in Korean.

In Korean: My heart hurts for the unfortunate incident regarding the tourist, as it is an incident that should never have happened. Guam is a United States territory. The Government of Guam, the Guam Visitors Bureau, and the Korean Consulate are doing all they can to ensure this never happens again. They are also taking safety measures.

She also leaves a message to the mourning family, praying that they will be able to bring their loved one home to properly bid him farewell.

In Korean: Stay strong and I wholeheartedly pray that the funeral plans and memorial rites will proceed smoothly.
