A dark shadow hangs over the typically vibrant village of Tumon after a Korean retiree was shot and killed by an armed robber along these lively walkways just days ago.

The tragedy came at a shock to Dong Wo Kim, who’s been working in the island’s tourism industry for more than 10 years.

“I was really astonished by hearing that news–because that’s never happened in the island of Guam–you know, especially here in Tumon–with many tourists walking around. I think the road was secured, but you know, I really feel bad about hearing that news,” Kim expressed.

Kim is taking visitors around Tumon today, though he told KUAM many of them wanted to cancel following the incident.

He said, “It was really big news on Korean media–on the news and the newspaper, even online. So, many customers are asking: Is Guam safe or did the murderer get arrested? They’re still scared of what happened.”

Kim also added, “Some customers… They wanted to cancel the tour, but we couldn’t–they’re still afraid maybe of walking around. But you know, I’m trying to calm my customers down because, you know, right now there’s plenty police–policemen, and security, and the other security guys are securing Tumon–so, they’re pretty fine right now.”

I Love Chocolate Outlet Owner Charlie Kim, recalled that heavy police presence the night of the fatal shooting. He was working at his store front not too far from the crime scene.

He said, “I saw about three police cars going there, so I was thinking it was about fighting, but it was the first time happening like this—a shooting. So I was freaked out…I’m living already 33 years in Guam–first time I heard of a shooting to the tourists.”

And just a few blocks away, Steve Carrara is equally as stunned about the situation, stopping mid-exercise on his route past where the very shooting occurred to speak with us.

Carrara commented, “It’s just horrible, and our condolences to the family. It’s not representative of Guam, and I just hope that they capture the perpetrator quickly.”

It's a resounding desire for the ensured safety of tourists and locals alike shared between all three, who have only experienced a safe Tumon.

Charlie Kim said, “I wish they catch the guy–the person who did the shooting. If they don’t catch right away, there are still people thinking that that it’s dangerous. Korean tourists, mostly they’re, thinking Guam is safe–that’s why they don’t go to the Philippines–they don’t go other places…Guam is a safe place, but you know… this happening like this.”

And Carrara added, “I've never seen anything like it. I mean, people look out for each other–when they see something happening, usually people stop it, and I don't know what the motivation was, and I've been here over 20-some years.”

While authorities remain on the hunt for the killer and with families and communities impacted forever, Carrara shared this message with the victim’s loved ones, “Our sincere condolences–it’s not representative of our island–I know that’s not probably very comforting. And we apologize and anything we can do…and I just hope that you can forgive us.”
