220 graduates from the University of Guam (UOG) are embarking on an exciting new chapter, officially becoming part of the esteemed lineage of Tritons after this weekend’s 2023 Fanuchånan commencement ceremony.

Family, friends, and dignitaries gathered at the UOG Calvo Field House, all in celebration of the remarkable cohort, which triumphed over nearly three years of the pandemic and the wake of Typhoon Mawar's devastation.

Class valedictorian Haley Carreon acknowledged this not-so-easy feat she and her fellow graduates accomplished in her address.

“I’m sure each of us has encountered a unique range of our own set of challenges–personal, academic, or the unpredictable obstacles that life inevitably presents us. Yet, here we are–on the brink of a new chapter, proof of the unwavering resilience that each of us possesses. By withstanding your own storms of adversity, your presence here today is a testament to your perseverance and tenacity,” She said.

UOG President Dr. Anita Borja Enriquez urged the recent Triton graduates to sustain their forward momentum, actively contributing to the enhancement of our island community.

Enriquez said, “Our new voyage is themed, ‘Tulos mo’na,’ we challenge you to do the same: to propel forward in unison with the community you have been an important part of. Give back in your capacities as new professionals, as value-added critical thinkers, problem solvers, and leaders represented across all industry sectors working collaboratively and in harmony with and through others as Triton alumni.”

It's a similar sentiment of reciprocity shared by keynote speaker and Harvard graduate Dr. Samuel Betances, who left the graduating class with this message:

“But above all else, help someone who needs you! And together, you will be able to excel and make our island safer, freer, stronger than when we found it.”
