Many of you are thawing out your turkeys and preparing all the fixings for that big Thanksgiving feast tomorrow.

We stopped by the Barrigada fire station to gather some safety tips when it comes to cooking this coming holiday!

As many island residents gear up for Thanksgiving, the Guam Fire Department wants to ensure the safety of all families during this holiday season by offering some tips.

Capt. Joe Sablan shared, “With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I'd like to remind everybody if you should be cooking please tend to your cooking. Have a timer on it, let family know if you are cooking and if you have to leave ensure that everything is turned off so we don't have any incidents or accidents at home.”

Deep-fried turkey, for some, has quickly become part of the thanksgiving tradition. But be careful, turkey deep fryers can be extremely dangerous.

Firefighter Luke Camacho said, “When deep frying turkey or any other meats please ensure the meat is actually thawed out and to to fry it at the right temperature, time it and never leave it unattended.”

Also the use of turkey fryers in close quarters poses a burn hazard to children and others in the home due to the oil inside a pot that can stay dangerously hot for hours after use. Do not use in, on or, under a garage, deck, breezeway, porch, barn, or any structure that can catch fire. Deep fry in an open area.

Thanksgiving is also the time when many break out the Christmas decorations and start putting up their trees and holiday lights.

“When you are going to put up Christmas lights in your establishments or homes, please use the proper tools for what it is intended for. Don't overload an outlet and make sure they serve that purpose. Don't overload them or don't extend them to another circuit which can cause fire or safety hazard,” Capt. Sablan said.

Also, check all holiday light cords to ensure they aren’t frayed or broken. Don’t string too many strands of lights together; no more than three per extension cord. If buying an artificial tree, look for a fire-resistant label. When putting it up, keep it away from sources of heat.

Never use electric lights on metallic trees. If getting a live tree, make sure it’s fresh and keep it watered. To test if the tree is fresh, bend the needles up and down to make sure no needles fall off.

With the recent accidents happening on the island's roadways, firefighter Beltran Tosco urges the importance of safe driving.

“As we approach this festive time of celebrations, I would just like to remind everybody to drive responsibly and if you are going to consume alcohol, don't get behind the wheel and have a designated driver,” Tosco said.
