GPD gets grant money for new hires, training

The Guam Police Department (GPD) has been awarded a total of 2.4 million dollars in federal grants aimed to bring in new recruits and improve training initiatives.
“The recent grant awards signify a substantial leap toward our collective aspiration for a community that is both secure and harmonious,” said Police Chief, Stephen Ignacio.
The funding comes from three federal grants, with the largest coming from the Cops Hiring grant at just over two million for recruitment and retention initiatives.
The second grant totals up to a quarter of a million dollars for implementing de-escalation training.
The third grant, totaled over $172,000 as part of the fiscal year 2023 Microgrant Community Policing and Development Fund.
These grants are designed to support GPD in expanding existing youth programs, fostering positive engagement between law enforcement and the community's younger members.
